Description
The blue sky sheen on this dark phase Hognose Snake provides an attractive contrast against the green moss background. The rare and illusive hognose snake is harmless to humans but can still perform a convincing bluff by flattening their head and hissing and puffing. They wiil also play dead and secrete a foul smelling musk. They prefer to prey on toads in loamy forest but are rare throughout their range due to habitat destruction and people who collect them for the pet trade or kill them out of ignorance and fear. If you are fortunate enough to observe wild creatures in their natural habitats preserve their existance by not killing or collecting. Photographed in the Chesapeake Bay region.
